Halloween Story time: The night Bobby Miller woke up (Some readers may find this tale unnerving)

"Well there you have it," said the realtor, eager to be done with the manor, which made her nervous with its creaks, thumps and rats.

"It's a 200 year old house, a real masterpiece. Its seen better days, and the water needs fixing, but I'll have a workman come out on Monday to get that. Until then, I left some bottles in the fridge and there's a supermarket near here."

Bobby smiled and swiped the keys from her hand. "Thank you kindly, I won't be too much trouble."
He was just as eager to move in as she was to walk out. His own house. Just him and his gentle Husky Riko, who jumped and rolled around the yard as happy as a kid in a candy shop. "Sure," he thought as he walked up the front steps, listening to their moaning. "It needs a little work, but it'll be a home in no time."

Riko sniffed the porch and every little speck of dust around the chilly entry hall, but seemed to agree with a healthy bark.

Things went well until Bobby reached the master bedroom, which set Riko growling and slobbering like a savage beast. Bobby was surprised; his dog had never acted that way.

They traveled to the next bedroom together; Riko still growled and gritted his teeth, each bedroom in turn affected Riko that way.

"Well, then I'll sleep in here and you can sleep in the kitchen," exclaimed Bobby, tired, and wanting to sleep in the very-inviting bed. But when he entered the room, Riko reluctantly followed him, whimpering and pawing the floor. Bobby ignored him, and fell into a warm slumber.

The next morning, as soon as Bobby exited the room, Riko followed. "See, Boy? There's nothing to worry about," he said, smiling and giving his Husky a friendly back rub. The rest of the day, as Bobby unpacked, Riko played and rolled and explored. But when night returned and Bobby attempted to go into the guest room he'd slept in the night before, Riko growled and blocked his way.
Bobby had never been scared of his pet, but at that moment he wasn't going to test the animal in front of him. He skipped down the hall into the next bedroom; Riko crawled into the room after his master, again whimpering and pawing.

The next morning, Riko bolted out of the room after Bobby, but instead of playing that day he followed Bobby silently, posting himself almost like a guard in front of the door whenever Bobby entered a room. That night Bobby yawned and attempted to enter the first bedroom; Riko growled and blocked the way, he ran down the hall and turned to enter the second bedroom but Riko sprinted down the hall, and even bit his master's hand! Bobby had never been bit by any of his pets and in his anger kicked his dog away before slamming the master bedroom door and locking Riko out.

He then prepared himself for sleep and got into bed...

That night as he rested he thought of Riko and regretted being so harsh. He got out of bed and reached down to pet the Husky but instead felt a cold hand grip his wrist. Long nails dug into his flesh. He tried to escape, but his back pressed against the wall and in the blackness he heard, the creature moving ever nearer, clawing it's way across the floor, licking its lips and smacking in hunger.
And as it reached him at last, and moved its talons to his neck he heard it whisper, "Too bad you didn't listen to Riko."
